We use WCAG 2.1 AA and the French RGAA framework as our practical reference. The site has not yet been formally audited, so we do not claim full compliance.

schema sans

Schema Sans is our body and interface typeface. Tokotype designed Plus Jakarta Sans and released it under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Schema Theory developed Schema Sans as a derivative, customizing alternate forms, the numeral 1, spacing, kerning, and variable-font assembly. Lotus Eden remains our display face.

The uppercase I has a crossbar, the lowercase l has a tail, and the numeral 1 has a long flag. The Q tail crosses its bowl. Spacing and kerning reduce common merges around ri, rn, rm, and rj.

These figures describe type construction. They do not measure reading speed, comprehension, low-vision performance, or individual preference.

human reading research

A study of 352 adults found that each participant averaged 314 WPM in their fastest font and 232 WPM in their slowest. The mean gap was 35%. A participant’s preferred font was also their fastest only 20% of the time.

Schema Sans has not been tested in a controlled human reading study. We make no claim that it raises reading speed or comprehension.

No universal typeface is best for every reader. Size, device, contrast, spacing, language, and context affect performance. The table compares type construction and does not rank human performance.

The Schema Theory homepage and Project Participant include experimental WebGL scenes. These scenes are decorative and are not required to read the page, submit the email form, or reach the legal pages. Some research pages may contain dense visual prototypes that are still being adapted for non-visual access.
