FONTLOG for Schema Sans ======================= This file provides detailed information on the Schema Sans font software. This information should be distributed along with the Schema Sans fonts and any derivative works. (FONTLOG is the documentation convention recommended by the SIL Open Font License for derivative works. It records provenance, change history and contributors so that downstream users can trace what came from where.) Basic Font Information ---------------------- Schema Sans is a humanist geometric sans serif in seven weights with true italics, tuned for character differentiation in running text and in reference strings — section numbers, article numbers, prices, codes. It is a DERIVATIVE of Plus Jakarta Sans by Tokotype, used and modified under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The overwhelming majority of the letterform drawing is Tokotype's work. The modifications are documented below and are deliberately narrow. Coverage: Latin, Latin Extended-A, Vietnamese, complete French including oe/OE, guillemets, section sign and euro. 1,187 glyphs. Units per em: 1000. x-height 536, cap height 745. Changelog --------- 23 Aug 2026 (Schema Theory) Schema Sans v1.001 - Aligned the name-table and head-table version metadata at 1.001. - Corrected the Schema Theory URL from schematheory.com to schematheory.org. - No outlines, spacing, kerning, features or metrics changed. 1 Jan 2026 (Schema Theory) Schema Sans v1.000 - Derived from Plus Jakarta Sans v2.x (Tokotype). - Promoted four alternates from the original's own stylistic sets to default forms: R from ss03, straight leg Q from ss03, tail crossing the bowl l from ss03, tailed, to break the I/l/1 collision I from ss01, crossbarred, same collision from the other side These are the original designer's drawings, not redraws. - Redrew the figure 1 with a long flag. Constructed parametrically from the stem width measured off each weight, so it holds across the family and follows the italic angle. Advance set to 616, inside the existing digit set, so it lines up with the other figures. - Added a slashed zero as glyph zero.slash, reachable through the standard 'zero' OpenType feature. Not made default. - Word space changed from 0.170 em to 0.265 em. The original value caused words to fuse at small sizes. - Added 12 units per glyph of tracking, on a 1000 unit em. - Added four pair-kerning corrections for merging combinations: ri +46, rn +30, rm +30, rj +40. Tokotype's 2,792 existing kern pairs are untouched. - Built variable versions on a wght 200-800 axis, roman and italic, with named instances and a STAT table. - All original OpenType features preserved: ss01, ss02, ss03, tnum, pnum, frac, numr, dnom, sups, subs, sinf, ordn, case, ccmp, locl, liga, calt, aalt, kern. Two changes were made and then REVERTED, recorded here because the reasoning matters: - ss03 forms for G, g, y and m were briefly used for visual character. All four reduced legibility (the spur on G separates it from C; curved tails on g and y are more distinctive than straight; the squared m blurred rn/m) and were reverted to the original drawings. - r.ss02 was briefly used because it scored well on a confusion metric for the ri/n merge. At text size its flat arm terminal reads as an 'i'. Reverted to the original r; the merge is handled with kerning instead. Information for Contributors ---------------------------- Schema Sans is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. See OFL.txt. Anyone may study, modify and redistribute it under the same licence. If you produce a derivative, please change the font name to avoid confusion, extend this FONTLOG with your changes, and keep the licence and this file with the fonts. The build is fully scripted and reproducible; see source/. The letterform decisions were made against a measurable confusion index (source/legibility.py) with an ablation harness (source/optimise.py). Note the documented limitation of that method: it measures ink overlap between rasterised glyphs and cannot see perceptual grouping. It approved the r.ss02 change that a reader immediately rejected.
